Kentucky National Guard, Djibouti Demining Company train as part of State Partnership Program

Kentucky National Guard engineers traveled more than 15,000 miles to Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, to conduct training with the Djiboutian military's Demining Company as part of the State Partnership Program from Aug. 19-29, 2021. The demining unit was established in 2001 to ensure that Djibouti could become mine-free after years of civil war throughout the 1990s; this was achieved in 2003. Eighteen years later, mines remain a threat in the surrounding region.

Chidi Blyden, deputy assistant secretary of defense for african affairs, visited U.S. Africa Command leadership at Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart, Germany, from Aug. 2-5. Blyden’s visit was intended to enhance understanding of the command and share policy and strategy objectives her office is working on. During her time she took a few moments to share her thoughts on U.S. Africa Command has evolved to meet the problem sets and challenges in Africa through shifts in thinking, resourcing and whole-of-government approach.

U.S., Kenyan Air Forces hone C-145 capabilities

After 3 months of training, U.S. Air Force Combat Aviation Advisors assigned to Air Force Special Operations Command Africa and Kenyan Air Force (KAF) partners completed a successful culmination exercise showcasing the wide range of capabilities the recently-acquired C-145 Combat Coyote will add to the KAF fleet. The engagement enabled a fully-trained flying crew - to include pilots, loadmasters, riggers and mechanics - proficient in operating and maintaining the C-145. The culmination of the training featured an exercise in all areas to include airdrop, medical evacuation, and short take-off and landing.

U.S. Africa Command leadership wrapped-up a four-day trip to Kenya and Djibouti Dec. 18, during which both Gen. Stephen Townsend, commander, and Sgt. Maj. Richard Thresher, command senior enlisted leader, conducted strategic engagements with counterparts and nation leadership to demonstrate continued commitment to working with African partners. As part of Townsend’s African Enlisted Development Strategy, Thresher focused his trip on the top Kenyan non-commissioned officers responsible for developing NCOs within the Kenya Defence Forces.

Russia deploys military fighter aircraft to Libya

Russian fighter jets were recently deployed to Libya in order to support Russian state-sponsored private military contractors (PMCs) operating on the ground there. The Russian fighter aircraft arrived in Libya, from an airbase in Russia, after transiting Syria where it is assessed they were repainted to camouflage their Russian origin. “The world heard Mr. Haftar declare he was about to unleash a new air campaign. That will be Russian mercenary pilots flying Russian-supplied aircraft to bomb Libyans,” said U.S. Army Gen. Stephen Townsend, commander, U.S. Africa Command. (Date taken = date uploaded to DVIDS)

Accountability Colloquium, Malawi 2019

Senior military leaders are gathering for an Accountability Colloquium taking place 26-28 Feb., 2019 in Lilongwe, Malawi. The Colloquium brings together African military commanders, chiefs of staff, and their legal advisors from throughout the Continent to discuss topics confronting current and future military operations to ensure adherence to the law. It also provides a venue to share best practices in serving their militaries. “The relationship between military commanders and legal advisers, military commanders are supposed to lead the troops both in the barracks as well as on the battlefield. Whereas legal advisors are supposed to guide commanders on making informed decisions so that they conduct operations in accordance with the law,” Brig. Gen. Dan Kuwali, the Chief of Legal Services, Malawi Defense Force. “The commander wants to efficiently accomplish the mission, he needs to understand the legal advisor and in so doing they can professionally and efficiently achieve their mission.”
