Colonel Thomas A. Davis

In June 2011, Colonel Tom Davis assumed duties as Director of Public Affairs, United States Africa Command. U.S. Africa Command is one of six geographic combatant commands within the Department of Defense unified command structure.

Colonel Davis served as an enlisted infantryman in the 1st Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, during which he participated in Operation Urgent Fury and the combat parachute assault of the island of Grenada, to free American medical students, in October 1983. 

After a successful enlisted tour, he left active duty and attended Portland State University, and was commissioned as a Distinguished Military Graduate in 1988.  After graduation from Portland State University in 1989, he returned to active-duty as an Infantry Officer.

Colonel Davis' military experience spans over 30 years of service in Special Operations, Aviation and Infantry units, at various levels of command and staff. His military service has included assignments in Georgia, California, Oregon, Korea, Virginia, Alabama, Honduras, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Kansas, Washington State, and Germany.  He has also served in Qatar, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Colonel Davis has numerous combat deployments as a Public Affairs Officer (PAO) in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF). He has been the PAO for a Joint Special Operations Task Force several times in both Afghanistan and Iraq.  He was the PAO for the International Security Assistance Force - Special Operations Forces (ISAF SOF), and the PAO for the Office of Defense Representative - Pakistan.  He was also the Chief of Future Operations at DCS STRATCOM - Multi National Force – Iraq, and a Public Affairs Plans and Operations Officer at the Combined Press Information Center in Qatar at the beginning of OIF.

Colonel Davis holds a Master's of Science Degree in Public Relations from Boston University and a Master's of Science Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.

His military education includes the U.S. Army War College, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Joint & Combined Warfighting School, Public Affairs Officer Qualification Course, U.S. Army Aviation Officer Advanced Course and the U.S. Army Infantry Officer Basic Course.

Colonel Davis' awards includes the Bronze Star (2 OLC), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (2 OLC), the Joint Commendation Medal (1 OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (3 OLC), Ranger Tab, Combat Infantry Badge, Combat Action Badge, Master Parachutist Badge with Combat Jump Star, Pathfinder Badge, Military Freefall Badge, Aviator Wings, and various service and unit awards.
