BAMAKO, Mali,
Oct 20, 2009 U.S. AFRICOM Public Affairs Note: The following statement was released by the U.S. Embassy in Bamako, Mali. The equipment was presented by the U.S. Department of State, not by the U.S. military.

U.S. Ambassador to Mali Gillian A. Milovanovic presented new tactical vehicles, communications, and other equipment, and military clothing to Mali Minister of Defense NatiƩ Pleah and the Mali Chief of Defense General Gabriel Poudiougou, on October 20, 2009.

In a ceremony at the Ministry of Defense, Milovanovic transferred 37 brand-new Land Cruiser pickup trucks, along with powerful communications equipment that will allow Malian security forces to move, transport and communicate across wide expanses of open desert.

In addition, replacement parts, clothing, individual equipment and other supplies will be provided in the next few weeks for a U.S. Government initiative totaling more than 5 million U.S. dollars (2.3 Billion CFA).

"These capacity-building assets are evidence of U.S. long-term support for the Malian government and its people," Milovanovic said. "We remain dedicated to responding to the needs of our Malian friends, allies, and partners to secure their borders and to achieve peace and security."

Does it really matter who gets the credit, whether AFRICOM merely because it exists, or the Embassy because of its very supportive Ambassador? We, representatives of the US Government, are inching our way toward credibility with a capital C.

I think most of your Anonymous commenters if not all, have never seen the inside of an embassy and wouldn't know how one works if it head them in the head I hate to say it, but I think the State Dep't and Military have very diff. cultures and approaches to doing business. I wish AFRICOM all the luck with this cross pollination experiment.

Let us not forget that the interagency relationships is a journey and not a destination. Rather than remain affixed to five ill chosen words...not by the US military—an unecessary and misleading comment, the true value of this story and the transfer of much needed equipment for counter terrorism, supports the TSCTP endeavors and raison d,etre. For that matter, this was a great success in terms of the interagency process due in the largest part to the quiet professionals who tenaciously persevered to make this concept a reality. Does it really matter who gets the credit, whether AFRICOM merely because it exists, or the Embassy because of its very supportive Ambassador? We, representatives of the US Government, are inching our way toward credibility with a capital C.

It's all taxpayers money anyhow and aligns with the same foreign policy goals. so please quit trying to give yourself all the credit and guess what? when the Malians get the equipment, they are not gonna sit and discuss who exactly, specifically, under X authority or Y title gave the stuff—They just know that it's from America.

Agree it is a team effort, and activities are being conducted with the full concurrence of the Ambassador. If we are on the same team, it is interesting that the Embassy would make a point of indicating the equipment was, presented by the U.S. Department of State, not by the U.S. military .

Bottomline, the equipment WAS DoD requested, funded, delivered, and training provided by DoD. The TEAM needs to recognizes the players.
