UN Military Unit Manuals Regional Seminar held in Ghana

The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center in Accra, Ghana hosted the first UN Military Unit Manuals Regional Seminar, with support from the US Africa Command March 8-10, 2017. The seminar shared the methodology for the eleven UN peacekeeping field manuals with all major African troop contributing countries for their awareness and implementation at their respective peacekeeping training centers. Partnering with the UN Dept. of Peacekeeping Operations and African academic centers of excellence such as the KAIPTC greatly enables AFRICOM to advance AFRICOM Theater Campaign Plan efforts to “Build African peacekeeping capacity”.

AFRICOM legal engagement brings attention to gender based violence

Former African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) Commander, Maj. Gen. Fred Mugisha draws an African spear as an analogy to describe the challenge of executing peace operations where multiple systems of law are in use, and soldiers require the support of their command in confronting extraordinary logistical challenges." Mugisha delivered the keynote address at the U.S. AFRICOM’s Fourth Africa Accountability Colloquium (ACIV) on “Responding to Gender Based Violence During Peace Operations.” Nearly 40 military legal professional and commanders from 20 African countries have come together in an effort to lay the foundation for responding to sexual violence allegations that occur during peacekeeping operations. Central Accord 15 focuses on African and European partnership

Jonathan Shine, commander, 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, works with central African military personnel during the preparation phase of Central Accord 2015 in Libreville, Gabon, May 14. Shine and his counterparts developed a plan of action for events taking place during the exercise. CA 15 exercises mission command proficiency for UN peacekeeping operations, develops multinational logistical and communications capabilities, and improves regional ability to command, control and support forward deployed forces.
