In a significant boost to regional health security, three state-of-the-art mobile biological threat detection laboratories are arriving in Zambia and poised to modernize infectious disease outbreak response across nine southern African nations—Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, and Tanzania.
From August 4-6, 2025, DTRA's International Counterproliferation Program (ICP), in partnership with the EU CBRN CoE and UNICRI, hosted the AFRICA SHIELD 2025 Regional Counterproliferation Workshop in Rabat, Morocco. This inaugural workshop brought together nearly 100 participants from across the African continent, representing law enforcement, military, policy, and UNSCR-1540 national-level coordination.

Additional sessions, such as African Leadership 2030 and What’s Next for African Enlisted Development, encouraged thoughtful dialogue and regional collaboration.
Co-hosted by U.S. Africa Command and the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, the conference provides a vital forum for senior noncommissioned officers to exchange best practices, tackle shared challenges, and foster enduring partnerships.
