Nigeria Chief of Defence Staff visits AFRICOM

Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin, Nigeria CDS, met with AFRICOM senior leaders to discuss strategies for security cooperation.

STUTTGART, Germany - The Nigeria Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, along with several of his most senior military officers, met with Gen. David Rodriguez, commander, U.S. Africa Command and AFRICOM component commanders to discuss strategies for security cooperation, Feb. 9-10, 2016.

The purpose of the visit was to reinforce the importance of a strong US-Nigeria security cooperation relationship.  Topics for discussion focused on ways to counter terrorism, joint operations, logistics and maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.

Participants in the two-day event included AFRICOM's component commanders as well as the senior primary staff.

"To contain Boko Haram, working together is a priority," said Rodriguez. "Your presence here builds upon our partnership - and that is key to combating threats in the region."

Traveling with Gen. Olonisakin were Maj. Gen. Clement Temidayo Olukoju, principal general staff officer to the CDS, Maj. Gen. Lincoln KJ Ogunewe, Nigeria Army chief of plans and policy, Rear Adm. I.O. Mohammed, Nigeria Navy, Air Commodore Aminu Yakubu, Nigeria defence attaché in Washington, DC, and COL E.J. Amadasun, assistant director of operations.
