AFRICOM commander visits USS Arlington

In March, Arlington conducted the first pier-side port visit of a U.S. Navy ship to Tunis, Tunisia in over 17 years.

STUTTGART, Germany – Marine Corps Gen. Thomas D. Waldhauser, commander, U.S. Africa Command visited the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS Arlington (LPD-24) May 9, 2019.

He thanked the crew for their efforts to support AFRICOM operations and engagements in the command’s area of responsibility.

In March, Arlington conducted the first pier-side port visit of a U.S. Navy ship to Tunis, Tunisia in over 17 years. The scheduled port visit was aimed at enhancing U.S.-Tunisia relations as the two nations work together to strengthen regional security and stability. Prior to the port visit, Arlington conducted training at sea with Tunisian Air Force 37th Helicopter Squadron.

During the trip, Waldhauser also met with Marines assigned to Special Purpose Air Ground Task Force Crisis Response – Africa at Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy.
