USAFRICOM Team,

Veterans Day is a time when we Americans honor those who have exhibited selfless service and sacrifice for our Nation and our way of life. This holiday is traditionally associated with the military due to its origins as the commemoration of the end of World War I; but especially in modern times, people deserving of such honors include those who do not don the uniform. I see that as I travel throughout the headquarters and meet the wonderful patriots on the team, military and civilian, who have served in combat operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Djibouti, Somalia, the Balkans, and others, some having completed multiple tours. This day is an occasion to remember those who gave their last full measure of devotion. We remember and honor our teammates who sacrificed their lives in defense of freedom, and we honor their families who remain behind. May they inspire us all to continue performing our duties to the highest standard and pursue a greater, lasting peace.

So, to all those who have served our country as veterans -- Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, civilians, contractors and family members, this is your day. I, and a grateful Nation, thank each of you for your contributions in forging, building, and sustaining peace.

Veterans Day is also observed as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and others, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marking the end of WWI. This day reinforces, through somber remembrance, the fact that we share so much in common with our partners -- such as the values of duty, honor, and country.

I ask you to pause during this day and remember our veterans. Please think about our wounded warriors who bear the scars of combat and those who bear mental scars as veterans. Thank you and your families once again for what you do each day to put service before yourself.
