Six members of the Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe (CNE) Band, known as The Diplomats, paid a visit to David Glasgow Farragut (DGF) Rota Elementary school on Naval Air Station in Rota, Spain, during a community relations project, January 27, 2009, while they prepared for a tour to West Africa.

The Naples, Italy-based CNE Band members were in Rota to link up with USS Nashville (LPD 13) as part of Africa Partnership Station (APS) Nashville. The Norfolk-based amphibious landing dock ship is deployed as a part of APS, an international initiative developed by U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Naval Forces Africa which aims to work cooperatively with U.S. and international partners to improve maritime safety and security in West and Central Africa.

"I'm truly looking forward to this tour," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Kori Gillis. "Not only is the experience of visiting a new place going to be exciting, but the chance to interact with people through the language of music is something that has always been special to me."

After the reception of applause, dancing and cheers, The Diplomats proved that music also moves people toward new friendships. As the band ended its set, band members were rushed with hugs, high-fives and kid-curious questions about their instruments.

"The performance was high energy and upbeat, and the kids loved it," said Mary Simmons, DGF Rota Elementary principal. "We're grateful for having them come out to visit."

The Diplomats covered songs from James Brown, Ray Charles and the Eagles among additional R&B and Pop tunes.

Simmons added that the adults enjoyed the show as well.

"I'm from a town close to New Orleans and [the Dixie land style song] made me feel like I was at Mardi Gras. That's how good they were. They were really tremendous. The only problem now is that they've set a new standard, and my kids are going to keep asking where The Diplomats are."

The Diplomats departed from Rota with USS Nashville on January 29, and are scheduled to make stops in Cameroon, Gabon, Ghana and Senegal during their African tour.
