The U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa Band performed at the Titsall private school in Abuja, Nigeria on February 11, 2009 for 200 children from six area schools.

The mid-day concert was the first of seven for the nineteen U.S. Navy and Marine Corps musicians who are on a week-long tour of Nigeria.

"The children loved it," said Titsall Governess Lizzie Mbawke. "When the musicians got up individually to explain and give demonstrations on their instruments the students were fascinated. I believe this rare treat will motivate the music students."

During the performance, nine year-old Gloria Orjii became a surprise guest conductor with the band when conductor Staff Sergeant Michael Maschmeier stopped the show, called Gloria to the stage, gave her a brief lesson, and turned her loose.

"It's something I've been doing for a long time now," said Maschmeier. "But in the twelve years I've been doing this I've never seen anyone do it so well so quickly. Either I'm a better teacher than I thought or she's a very talented individual."

The trip is part of on-going collaborations between the United States and Nigeria.

In addition to the seven concerts, U.S band members and the Nigerian Armed Forced band will hold two workshops at the Mogadishu Cantonment.

A joint concert is planned for February 15 in downtown Abuja with performances by all three Nigerian Military Bands and the Naval Forces Europe and Africa Band.
