The Website of U.S. Army Africa, based in Italy, is offering full coverage of President Obama's visit to Ghana July 10-11, his first visit to sub-Saharan Africa since taking office in January. The Website of U.S. Air Forces Africa is providing updates on U.S. military support to the president's visit.

The Army site is at www.usaraf.army.mil.

The site includes links to a range of news sources, including Voice of America and BBC, as well as official documents such as White House transcripts and Africa-related documents from the G8 Summit. President Obama attended the G8 Summit in Italy before making his overnight visit in Africa.

Instead of "doing some sort of grand tour just once a term," President Obama's visit to Ghana is in conjunction with other world travel to demonstrate that Africa is an integral part of the world community, an administration official told reporters July 9, 2009.

"We are trying to make a point about the fact that Africa is a part of the grand foreign policy vision; it's not some separate sphere that one engages in and then hops out and has no relationship to the rest of the foreign policy agenda," Michelle Gavin, senior advisor for African affairs on the National Security Council, told U.S. reporters during Obama's visit to Italy. U.S. Army Africa and U.S. Air Forces Africa are the Army and Air Force components of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). Africa Command and its components do not have assigned forces but instead focus on coordinating military support for U.S. foreign policy in Africa.
