The United States Marine Corps is a national treasure. For 234 years now, the mere mention of Marine makes American citizens beam with pride and our enemies cower, and offers hope to destitute millions around the globe. On behalf of the more than 2 million men and women serving alongside you in uniform, it is my privilege to wish our Marines and their families a glorious birthday.

Since the early days at Tun Tavern, names like Samuel Nicholas, Smedley Butler, "Chesty" Puller and "Brute" Krulak symbolize heroic Marines who are always "first to fight." In places like Tripoli, Belleau Wood, Iwo Jima, the Chosin Reservoir, Khe Sanh, Fallujah - and now in Afghanistan - U.S. Marines have overcome the most daunting adversities.

We are also truly grateful for our Marine families, who are the foundation of strength and courage for their Marines. These families serve with unwavering devotion and sacrifice. "The Few and the Proud" would not be so without you.

On behalf of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, I congratulate you and your families on more than two centuries of noble service. Your proud tradition, razor-sharp readiness, and remarkable bravery make us very proud of you all.

Semper Fi!

Admiral M.G. MULLEN
