Africa Partnership Station (APS) East wrapped up shipboard interoperability engagements with members of the Mauritian National Coast Guard (MNCG) Police Force during a graduation ceremony on the flight deck of APS platform Swift (HSV 2), February 24, 2010.

APS East platforms Swift and USS Nicholas (FFG 47) pulled into Mauritius on February 21 and began a rigorous three-day instructional exchange with the maritime professionals in Port Louis. The students received classroom instruction and hands-on practical training from U.S. Navy sailors in subject areas such as damage control, basic firefighting, force protection measures and visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) procedures.

"From the very first day we came aboard the ship, we were given many scenarios which we had to run through and perfect," said Private Andy Eddy, one of the trainees. "The VBSS course was great because it was filled with important tactical knowledge and taught us how to properly search, question and maneuver an intruder."

However, training wasn't the only thing these forces did during their time aboard; they were also able to engage with sailors and get to know them on a personal level. The graduation ceremony highlighted the maritime partnerships that have been built between Mauritius, the APS international staff, and the United States.

"I have worked with the Mauritius Police Force before...you are a professional, motivated, dedicated and ready force," said Captain James Tranoris, commander of APS East. "I trust that you have learned some new information and skills, and I know our U.S. sailors have also learned from your questions and interest in the training."

With successful port visits already complete in Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Mauritius, Swift and Nicholas are scheduled to visit Seychelles next and continue training with maritime professionals in support of APS East.

APS East is an international cooperative initiative in support of Naval Forces Africa which aims to unite international partners to enhance maritime safety and security throughout the African continent.

Swift and Nicholas are on regular scheduled deployments within the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility. APS East is being conducted in cooperation with Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Africa and U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).
