AFRICOM PAO Note: This statement by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is being posted on the U.S. Africa Command website in the interest of explaining U.S. foreign policy with African nations. The role of U.S. Africa Command is to coordinate ongoing Defense Department support for U.S. foreign policy. On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate the people of Togo on the 50th commemoration of your national day on April 27. On this historic occasion, we join you in celebrating the progress that Togo has made and looking forward to the promise of the years to come. Holding presidential elections on March 4 was an important step towards democracy and good governance. Staying on this path and implementing necessary democratic and economic reforms will allow Togo to emerge as an increasingly stable, democratic, and peaceful country. The United States believes in Togo's potential and we are committed to Togo's future. Let us redouble our efforts to broaden the partnership between our governments and deepen the friendship between our peoples. I offer best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous holiday.
