The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Dr. Jean Ping, has learnt with great concern the news of the twin blasts that hit Kampala, Uganda, in the night of 11 July 2010, claiming the lives of numerous innocent victims. The Chairperson of the AUC firmly condemns this terrorist act which targeted innocent people who had gathered to celebrate the Finals of the FIFA World Cup being hosted by Africa for the first time.

The African Union Commission Chairperson recalls that this treacherous and cowardly act perpetrated against innocent persons renews the urgent and imperious need to strengthen international co-operation and coordination in the fight against all forms of terrorism. He further reiterates the resolve of the AU to continue to contribute its quota to efforts made by the international community in this regard and its firm commitment to enhance and implement legal and institutional instruments provided for this purpose. This tragic event will strengthen the collective determination of Africa to play its part in the struggle waged by the international community to stamp out the phenomenon of terrorism.

On this sad and painful occasion, the AUC Chairperson would like to convey to H.E. Mr. Yoweri Museveni, President of the Republic Uganda, the families of victims, and the People and Government of Uganda, his heartfelt sympathy.
