As part of an independently organized TED talks, the Department of Defense is hosting TEDxPentagon, a military focused speaker series featuring stories from men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. DoD's TEDxPentagon event, which will be streamed live on the Web, is entitled "The Human Stories" and will feature 10 service members, including GEN Ward, and one Army spouse. TED, which stands for Technology Entertainment Design, is a nonprofit organization devoted to ideas worth spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED conference invites the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. GEN Ward will be the final speaker at the 19 November event speaking on the topic of legacy. Other speakers include Navy Lt. John F. Pucillo, who will speak about serving in Iraq where he lost a leg in a roadside-bomb explosion in 2006; Army Col. Geoffrey Ling, who will speak about being on the cutting edge of science thorough his work at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency; Marine Corps Master Sgt. Julia Watson, who will speak about her experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan and her outreach to women in those countries; Cmdr. James Edwards, the captain of the Navy's first littoral combat ship; Lt. Gen. Benjamin Freakley, commander of the Army Accessions Command; Air Force Staff Sgt. Jeffrey W. Schmidt, a tactical air controller; Rear Adm. David Titley, the oceanographer and navigator of the Navy; Air Force Tech. Sgt. Stuart Wilson, a cyberspace defense operator; Navy Capt. (Dr.) William Todd, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, and Army spouse Sarah Hertig. Event Details: Who: GEN Ward, nine other service members and an Army spouse will share their stories as part of a Department of Defense sponsored Web event called TEDxPentagon: The Human Stories. When: 19 NOV 2010 1000-1500 EST (GEN Ward is the final speaker scheduled to start at 1445 EST/2045 CET) Where: United States Navy Memorial, Washington DC Why: The Department of Defense views using TED as a 21st century extension of long-standing community relations activities such as its longstanding speaker's bureau. TEDxPentagon provides a far-reaching capability using technology to connect millions of potential viewers across the globe with America's military members and their personal stories.
