AFRICOM Commander Visits U.S., Partner Troops during Exercise Cutlass Express

U.S. Army Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, commander, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), visited the Expeditionary Mobile Base USS Lewis B. Puller (ESB 3) to observe evolutions and meet with troops during the multinational maritime exercise Cutlass Express 2019.2 (CE 19.2) in Djibouti, Nov. 4, 2019.
For the past several years, AFRICOM has brought African military legal advisors from across the continent together with U.S. military legal advisors for the Africa Military Law Forum (AMLF). This year AMLF met for the fifth time at the International Institute for Humanitarian Law in Sanremo, Italy, from Sept. 10-12, 2019.
To better understand what the burgeoning youth population means for Africa’s future, AFRICOM hosted a panel of youth leaders in Stuttgart, Germany, to discuss ideas for engaging African youth as a means to promote peace throughout the continent.

Whitney Baird, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for West Africa and Security Affairs in the Bureau of African Affairs, met with the U.S. Ambassadors to Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger to discuss field perspectives and an overall approach for the Sahel region of Africa, in Stuttgart, Germany, Oct. 8, 2019.
U.S. Army Gen. Stephen Townsend, commander, U.S. Africa Command visited Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Sept. 16-19, 2019 marking his first trip to West Africa since taking command in July.
General Stephen Townsend, commander, U.S. Africa Command, culminated his multi-country West Africa regional visit in Niger, where he met with President Mahamadou Issoufou, senior Nigerien military officers, and deployed U.S. troops, Sept. 18-19.
Commander Reinforces U.S. Commitment and Support to Burkina Faso

U.S. Army Gen. Stephen Townsend, commander, U.S. Africa Command, met with Chiefs of Defense from Liberia, Ghana, and Malawi Aug. 13-14, 2019 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. He also met with a representative from the Botswana Defence Force. Townsend and the African generals participated in the Africa Senior Enlisted Leader Conference.
