ATLANTIC OCEAN (Jan. 14, 2018) Explosive rounds from the 5-inch gun aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) hit targets during a naval surface fire support exercise with the Royal Moroccan Navy as part of exercise African Sea Lion, Jan. 14, 2018. Among African Sea Lion’s objectives is to test and evaluate US and Moroccan ability to conduct coordinated, combined naval surface fire support exercises on the Tan Tan firing range. Ross, forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, is on its sixth patrol in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in support of regional allies and partners and U.S. national security interests in Europe and Africa. In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. forces conducted an airstrike against al-Shabaab militants on Jan. 2, 2018, approximately 50 kilometers west of the capital, killing two terrorists and destroying one vehicle-borne improvised explosive device, preventing it from being used against the people in Mogadishu.
